One Thousand Days Transformed - The Campaign for Cedarville

by Sarah Mummert, Student Public Relations Writer

Dr. David ā€œPeteā€ Peterson’s expertise in strength training and conditioning is reflected in two textbooks that are used at the United States Naval Academy (USNA), Colorado State University and ĆŪ¶¹app, where he serves as associate professor of exercise science.

Peterson served as deputy director in the physical education department and director of the Human Performance Lab for four years at the USNA prior to retiring from the U.S. Navy. Based on his education and professional experience in physical fitness and strength and conditioning, Peterson turned the curriculum used in the USNA’s personal conditioning course into a formal textbook, ā€œA Practical Guide to Personal Conditioning,ā€ which is now in its second edition at Van-Griner Learning.

Dr. David PetersonThe book is still a textbook at the USNA and at Cedarville, where it is used in the sport medicine and the exercise science programs’ strength and conditioning course.

ā€œWhen people start out on a physical fitness path, they may be confused by current fads and expensive programs,ā€ said Captain Debra Yniguez, director of the USNA Human Performance Lab, who uses the textbook in her classes. ā€œThis complete guide can educate beginners to experienced physical fitness trainers on the mechanisms and proper procedures to ensure safety and success in their personal physical fitness goals. My students are better prepared once they have completed the semester and used this guide to personal conditioning.ā€

At Cedarville, Peterson published a second textbook with colleagues Dr. Jeremy Kimble, professor of systematic and applied theology, and Dr. Trent Rogers, dean of the school of biblical and theological studies. This book, ā€œA Christian Guide to Body Stewardship, Diet, & Exercise,ā€ addresses physical fitness and health from a biblical perspective. Now in its fourth edition, it’s being used at Colorado State University, with 13 additional universities having requested review copies.

ā€œI spent hundreds of hours researching and writing,ā€ said Peterson. ā€œIt’s wonderful to see a textbook written specifically for a general education class at Cedarville being used at one of the biggest universities in Colorado.ā€

Though writing may not be his passion, Peterson used his expertise to create resources for the next generation on general health and wellness as well as advanced strength and conditioning.
